Industrial phosphate applications
Phosphate in metal treatment, water treatment, animal feed and food: where the grade is a compliance question rather than a price question, and why grades are not interchangeable.
Outside agriculture, phosphate is bought for a chemical function rather than a nutrient one — phosphating a steel surface, sequestering hardness in a boiler, supplementing phosphorus in animal feed, acidulating a beverage. In each case the specification is set by the application and the grade is a compliance matter.
The distinction that matters most is between fertilizer, technical, feed and food grades of the same chemical name. They are not the same product at different prices. Each has its own purification route, its own impurity limits and its own documentation, and substituting one for another is a regulatory failure for the buyer as well as the seller.
Metal treatment
Phosphoric acid is used to convert a steel surface into a phosphate coating that holds lubricant and anchors paint. The acid concentration, the free acid to total acid ratio, and the impurity profile all affect the coating, which is why technical grade is specified rather than fertilizer grade.
Water treatment
Polyphosphates and phosphonates are used to sequester calcium and magnesium and to inhibit scale in cooling and boiler systems. The active ingredient is a specific phosphate species, and the specification is about that species rather than about P2O5 content.
Animal feed
Dicalcium phosphate and monocalcium phosphate supply phosphorus and calcium in compound feed. Feed grade carries strict limits on fluorine, arsenic and heavy metals that fertilizer grade is not made or tested against, and those limits differ by jurisdiction.
The documentation is the product here. A feed mill buying DCP needs the fluorine, arsenic and lead figures on the COA against the destination's feed additive limits, plus any registration the importing country requires.
Food
Food-grade phosphoric acid must meet a monograph — E338 in the EU — and carry the conformity documentation to prove it. Fertilizer grade cannot be upgraded by paperwork, and a food manufacturer substituting it is committing a serious compliance breach regardless of what the certificate says.
The mistake that costs the most
Treating grade as a price tier rather than a specification. The chemical name on the bag can be identical while the impurity limits, the test methods and the legal status are entirely different. Always buy the grade the application requires, documented.
Questions this application raises
Do you supply industrial and feed grades?
Phosphoric acid, phosphate rock, DCP and MCP are described on this site for reference because buyers ask about them, but we do not currently offer them. The pages explain the grades and the documentation so a buyer understands what to look for.
Can fertilizer-grade phosphoric acid be used in food?
No. Food grade has to meet a monograph and be documented against it. The two are different products with different purification, and no certificate can convert one into the other.

The crop, the soil or the system decides the grade. Give us the application and the quantity, and the recommendation comes back with the specification.
